iPod touch January Upgrade Problems

iPod touch January Upgrade

I’ve never had an iTunes/iPod sync issue… Until this evening. I ran into problems related to the iPod touch January Upgrade released today and announced on Macworld 2008 this morning. You can read the gory details in the blog item I wrote for the O’Reilly Mac Center.

I discovered one item in favor of the Windows Mobile platform after performing the iPod touch upgrade. The iPod touch mail client (and presumably the iPhone’s mail client) does not support SSL encryption for IMAP4/SMTP mail configurations. CORRECTION:  The SSL option is in the Advanced tab.

I took the plunge for the update even though I had jailbroken my iPod and already had been using the Apple apps and more. It was worth it for the update Apple apps but upgrading means I no longer have my third party apps.

It is almost a crime Apple does not have the iPhone/iPod Touch SDK out already. Some of the third party apps I was running really showed off what these little units can do. Installing the BSD subsystem and a terminal gave me remote control over my Mac. Running VNC to control my Mac’s was nice as well. Some of the games made my cellphone games look sick and underpowered. SInce these third party apps were free I hope Apple supports the freeware developers.
