More ActiveSync 4.5 Annoyances

ActiveSync 4.5 Connection SettingsMore ranting and grumblings from this blog. Sorry ’bout that.

When you install ActiveSync 4.5, it deletes all your existing Windows Mobile device partnerships. But, wait, that’s not all. If you previously synced wirelessly using Bluetooth (Microsoft removed the option to sync via WiFi way back in AS40), you have to rebuild that set of connection settings too.

This means you need to verify which serial port the Bluetooth adapter on your PC is using (COM4 in my case), set it, set the desktop BT to discoverable, then head back to your Pocket PC to BT pair with the desktop (or notebook). You should probably delete your old BT pairing setting before setting up the Pocket PC.

You might want to (carefully) switch to Google Sync and remove the ActiveSync/WMDC/Outlook sync bottleneck

  2. Hopeless!

I have very important contacts that I’d like to retrieve and I cannot because ActiveSync will not reocgnize my device. I am aware that many of us are facing the same issues, but all I’d like to see is an answer..not more complaints! Is there anyone around who has ANSWERS to this problem?!

Activesynch 4.5.0, also only sych if the USB to PC is unchecked for “Enable advanced network funtionality”.

All morning I was trying to delete/uninstall AS4.5 and it would not let me, until I stumbled upon this board. Thank you so much for this post, it worked instantly! dejota —————————-

    Hi,
It seems ,that Dan diagnosis for AS4.5 could be the right one(wrong/corrupted Mapi32.dll).
To fix problem caused by this file first double click Fixmapi.exe , located either in C:\winnt\system32 or C:\windows\system32.
Second step is to install AS4.5 . That’s all

I can’t help thinking about the millions of lost hours, and frustration caused by M$’s lousy software. Long ago I had an IPAQ 2400, loaded AS on my laptop, which then took an extra 2 minutes to boot. Got a T-M Wing last year, downloaded AS5 from M$, loaded it on to an XP desktop which now suffers from a similar super long boot process. -Looks like it tries to sync at boot. I know screwing w/AS = more problems, but how can I control AS’s damage to my XP desktop? (Turn it on and off when I want it too.)

After upgrading XP Pro-SP3 to Vista Ultimate SP1 I uninstalled Activesync 4.5 then installed WMD. When launching WMD I get a message that windows is trying to install Activesync follwed by a message that Activesync is not supported. WMD then launches and hangs. Any thoughts?

ActiveStynk is the flakiest, buggiest program I have ever seen. It’s a disgrace. I have a Treo 700w and ActiveStynk consistently refuses to synchronize my Outlook notes folder. By rebooting my PC and the handheld, I can sometimes get it to work, but there are *always* problems. Microsoft, Kiss My Grits! Your software sucks!

    I have a Samsung SCH-i760 with Windows Mobile 6.

My Office PC has Windows XP and Activesynch 4.5.0, which will only sych if the USB to PC is unchecked for “Enable advanced network funtionality”.

Were as my home PC has Vista with Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 and I must check the “Enable advanced network funtionality”

How do I get arround having to make this change everytime I synch between these two Windows Systems?

  11. Kevin

Got it figured, the new PDA 214 is Windows Mobile 6, this software has apparently been improved it now will not accept formula in the cells of Excel so when it is synchronised it gets upset and crashes

  12. Kevin

Active sync 4.5 (or Active Stink) just drops the connection half way through this just trashes the files on my new hp 214. it runns ok when I sync my hp 2210 any one got the same problem or dare I ask a solution? hp blame Microsoft and Microsoft blame hp. if I cant find a solution within the Amazon cooling off period the 214 is going back

  13. Liz

Same problem here. I said “yes” when the rude little window interrupted me to “Update” my software, not really paying attention.
Now every time I logon it says its trying to configure ActiveSuck 4.5.

  14. David

My kids started to install ActiveSync 4.5 and now the program will not install or stop trying to install. Any company that can not make a program that will cancel needs to be sued. I am starting to think Mac is the way.

  15. Louise

Todds information is correct. My computer is running xp and my laptop windows vista. The only thing I don’t like about Windows Mobile Device Center is that there is no way (correct me if im wrong) to locate the hidden files located in the Device.

On that note The T-mobile Wing is very customizable, with many many features, programs and available software. Its everything I wanted in a phone, others like different less complicated things This phone is a 10 in *my* opinion.

Gerib, I am getting the exact same message as you are. I would like to know the same thing that you would. Could someone please help with this issue?

  18. gerib

I’ve tried to install AS4.5 from the CD and as a download. I get ERROR: Problem with this windows installer package. A DLL required for this install to complete could not be run. Is this the Mapi32.dll you spoke about?

  19. richardafo@gmail.com

got a new mc50 and have tried to activesync it with my dell inspiron 6400 notebook.
    Tried version 4.1, 4.2, 4.5.
Wouldnt budge, almost always gets “version not compatible” error message and cannot “explore” the phone.
sigh….. cant deploy any applications unless can get the phone properly connected…
funny thing, it connects very easily on another old desktop pc.

ActiveSync = Suck. Microsoft, please make a half decent product next time. If you’re going to advertise features, make sure that they work first. Also, until ActiveSync actually actively synchronizes, I recommend renaming the product ActiveSuck because that is all it does at this time.

I have had Significant problems installing AS 4.5 as it keeps coming up with an error code (85010014) and that I don’t have ms outlook as my default email. I don’t want to sync email just contacts and calendar. Does anyone have any idea’s? I am also going to check out the Laplink product. Thanks in advance

A whole lot of questions in here… not many answers. I also bought a T-mobile wing and it doesn’t recognize that there is a device connected. I’m fairly new to all this so I thought it was just me but reading all of this… I might be in trouble.

  24. M. Delarosa

Regarding Stephanie Nelson’s post on 10/3/07, I just purchased an ATT 8925 Tilt phone and when I tried to install ActiveSync 4.5 on my laptop running on Windows XP, the same message “DLL required for the download is missing” came up. Were you able to solve the problem?

  25. William L Bonney

Version 4.5 does not work as well as 3.8 did for me. My Dell X5 seems to sync ok with 4.5 but then says it has encounterd an error and must close, do I want to send a report. The icon continues to revolve on both the PC and PDA after the error message. I am tired of the error message. Any fix?

anyone knows how to set up the Bluetooth, 4 digit PIN so my T-Mobile Wing can talk to my computer… everytime i try to synch my device to my computer, the device asks me to enter a 4 digit code (PIN) which i have no idea how to setup in bluetooth seetings on my computer… anyone? help!

  27. Stephanie Nelson

I am trying to use my t-mobile dash as a modem. In order for this to happen I have to have activesync downloaded to my laptop. But activesync won’t download because it prompts a “DLL required for the download is missing”! What is that about? I have Windows XP, and its suppose to be compatible

  28. Steve

After PocketPC 1 and 2, I swore that I would never use another Microsoft product if avoidable. After 5 or 6 trouble-free years with my Palm, I was seduced into purchasing a WinMob T-Mobile Wing. It looks like Microsoft has still not learned how to get the synch thing straight. Unfortunately, in the meantime, I hear that Palm has learned to emulate Microsoft.

  29. Margo

    Todd,
Thank you so much for the information! You saved me a ton of time trying to make somehting work that just won’t.

Margo: Windows Vista uses the new WMDC (Windows Mobile Device Center) for syncing. ActiveSync is for Windows XP/2000. WDMC does not support PIM syncing for 2002 devices. So, you are out of luck. You either need to drop back to an XP PC or get a new Pocket PC. Here’s what the WMDC page says: For Windows Embedded CE 4.2, 5.0, Pocket PC 2002, and Smartphone 2002 devices, basic connectivity support includes connecting over USB and serial, using desktop passthrough with the PC’s internet connection, and file browse.

  31. Margo

    Hi!
I am also trying to hook up my Pocket PC 2002 PDA with Vista….I can’t even download Activesync 4.5…has anyone found a way aroud this?

Regarding the “Set Up Not Complete The wizard was interupted before Microsoft ActiveSync 4.5 could be completely installed” error. In many cases, that is because Mapi32.dll (often found in Windows/System)is missing or corrupted. For example, Eudora will replace the Microsoft Mapi32.dll with their own. Solution: Find another copy of Microsoft Mapi32.dll… rename the current file to Mapi32.old, replace the file. Problem solved.

  33. Trinidex

I was using AS4.2 with my ETen M700, everything was fine. I wanted to upgrade to WM6 and teh instructions said I needed to use AS4.5 I installed it and tried to connect my device – disaster! The rapimgr.exe process runs at 99% and slows the computer to a crawl.

After 3 attempts, I uninstalled it, and re-installed AS4.2 (available from http://www.microsoft.com) and now things are working again.

  34. PUPS

I’m so mad I bought this new Tmobile wing and it wont sync with my computer it says I need 4.5 or higher? So I guess my garmin I just bought for it wont work as well……WTF is going on here?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? $200 Garmin $600 wing = $800 for what? I should have bought an Iphone….

  35. todd Post author

Deric: I haven’t tried it myself. However, you may want to do some research on a recently released product from Laplink called PDAsync. Let us know if you learn more about it and if it solved your problem.

  36. Deric Law

    dear all,

i had just recently bought a laptop with window vista home basic, and found out the window mobile device center can’t sync with my pocket pc 2002.

I know the best solution is upgrade my pocket pc, but i don’t want to throw away my pocket pc 2002, anyone know how do i connect my pocket pc 2002 to window vista?

appreciate your help or any suggestion for me?

    thanks in advance
    Deric

  37. Andy

Ok, a bit more about the Vista thing…

I was told (possibly by M$) that devices would connect through the new sync centre within Vista.

Not deliberately related to that, I’ve been a total git as home recently so purchased a new laptop for my beloved wife as hers was about three years old (might work). I figured that for a new machine, Vista was the way to go and was surprised by a number of things:

    1) What? you dare ask me to connect to shared folder on an XP machine? No, there won’t be any support articles that even give you the faintest clue. What you were expecting it to be simpler? You think I’m some kind of Mac…
    2) Sorry, but you’ve still got to download stuff to sync your PPC with Vista even though support is “built in” and you no longer need ActiveSync.
    3) Vista’s not *that* pretty anyway. Redmond may have “started their photocopiers”, but they appear to have put the wrong toner in…

  38. Andy

WTF? I never had connection errors before so why now? AS4.5 sucks ass! Anybody know where I can get hold of an earlier version that works?

FYI, the equivalent thing in Vista appears to be worse! (not only slower, but fails to sync the calendar with a WM5 device)

  39. Andrew T Drefs

Let’s face it, Activesync just sucks. I just switched from my faithful old Treo to a Cingular 8525 and had so many issues they replaced my phone, along with my business partners identical 8525. I’ve updated the software on the phone, downloaded Activesync 4.5 and still 19 out of 20 attempts fail to sync! Oh the joy! Oh to go back to the days when I would tap the HotSync button and somehow, inexplicably my phone would, well it would really “sync”! Can you believe it?! Now I just get to sit and stare over and over again at my screen saying it’s looking for changes and then says it’s not connected. What a pile of crap!

  40. Michael Davies

I had a ‘password’ error reported on ActiveSync 4.5 so I uninstalled it; I have deleted all references to ‘activesync’ in the registry.
On trying to re-install it I get the error:
    Set Up Not Complete
The wizard was interupted before Microsoft ActiveSync 4.5 could be completely installed.
Your system has not been modified. To complete instalation at another time, please run setup again.
Click Finish to exit the wizard.

    Any ideas? Help!!
    Michael

  41. Catherine Christense

I am trying to download Activesync 4.5. Every time I do, the message says “download successful,” but another Internet Explorer window opens to say I’m not connected to the Internet, although all checks say everything is fine. Any help out there? cac

  42. Sam

hmm, i guess my error is not common. it says something about shell32.DLL so i guess the only way to fix it is to re-install windows and just install activesync 4.1

  43. Greg Slack

After upgrading and spending hours getting BT to work again with AS 4.5, now, every time I attempt to sync, I get a BSOD with NO_MORE_IRP_STACK_LOCATIONS. Yet another “Feature Ridden” piece of work.

  44. Sam

help!! i upgraded to MS Activesync 4.5 adn now whenever i try to open it i get a pop up box saying something about an “illegle file system relocation”
and now i cant run some other programs!!

  45. Bill Marec

I wish to have the annoyances listed above. I recently upgraded from ActiveSync 4.2 to 4.5 and now my Windows Mobile will not connect. It states that the version of Activesync must be greater than 4.1!
    Any ideas?
